Students Explore Water-Wise Gardening at Wlala Garden:
A Lesson in Sustainability and Exotic Flora
Hands-on Workshop Highlights Drought-Tolerant Plants, Landscape Design, and Global Environmental Stewardship

In an inspiring educational tour at Wulala Garden, a group of students recently dived into the world of water-efficient landscaping and the care of exotic plants, gaining valuable practical knowledge about sustainable horticulture.

The workshop, designed to foster an appreciation for environmental conservation, focused on the principles of Xeriscaping—the practice of designing landscapes to reduce or eliminate the need for irrigation. This is particularly relevant for regions facing water scarcity, such as the Middle East and other arid climates.
The students’ journey began with an exploration of the artistic world of Ficus trees. They were captivated by the intricate and popular shapes and styles cultivated by expert gardeners, including the elegant Vase-shaped Ficus, the graceful S-curve Ficus, and the unique, whimsical Ginseng Ficus (Ficus microcarpa). These plants are not only prized for their beauty but also admired for their adaptability, making them excellent choices for low-maintenance gardens.
The tour then moved to the majestic Palm family, a cornerstone of landscaping in tropical and desert climates alike. The students learned to identify species like the iconic Date Palm tree, known for its historical significance and fruit production, and the elegant Areca Palm (Dypsis lutescens), a popular choice for providing a lush, tropical feel while offering privacy hedging.

A core part of the session was dedicated to understanding the care and maintenance of plants that thrive under challenging conditions. Experts from Ulala Garden emphasized the selection of species that are inherently heat-resistant and drought-tolerant. Key maintenance tips included:
- Selecting the right well-draining soil mixes.
- Understanding efficient watering cycles to promote deep root growth and conserve water.
- Utilizing mulch to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.

“This was more than just a garden tour,” said one of the participating students. “We didn’t just see plants; we learned the science and responsibility behind sustainable gardening. Understanding how to care for low water consumption plants is a crucial skill for our future, especially in the face of global climate challenges.”
The visit to Ulala Garden successfully bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application. The students left with not only a deeper understanding of plant care knowledge but also a reinforced sense of global citizenship. They recognized that adopting water-wise practices and choosing the right drought-resistant plants are essential steps anyone can take toward building a greener global community, one garden at a time.
